Magnetic particle testing in Ontario

A sensitive method for locating surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic welds and components.

What magnetic particle testing reveals

MT magnetizes a ferromagnetic component and applies visible or fluorescent magnetic particles. Leakage fields created by a discontinuity attract the particles, producing an indication that a qualified technician can evaluate.

Common MT applications

Typical applications include welds and heat-affected zones, carbon-steel forgings and castings, structural parts, machined components and repaired areas.

When MT is a strong choice

MT is valuable when the component is ferromagnetic and the primary concern is a tight crack or another discontinuity at, or close to, the surface. It can cover a practical inspection area quickly.

Limitations to consider

Material suitability must be confirmed before inspection. Geometry, surface condition, coatings, access and the required direction of magnetization can affect the examination.

Controlled examination and reporting

VeriTech provides Level II / Level III capability for MT. Examination conditions and results are documented to support traceability through final reporting.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What materials can be inspected with MT?

MT is intended for ferromagnetic materials such as many carbon and low-alloy steels. It is not suitable for aluminum, austenitic stainless steel or other non-ferromagnetic materials.

What defects can MT find?

It is most effective for surface and near-surface discontinuities such as cracks, laps, seams and certain weld-related indications.

Can MT inspect painted surfaces?

Surface condition and coating thickness can affect sensitivity. The procedure and project requirements determine whether coating removal or another method is needed.

Is MT only for welds?

No. It may be applied to suitable welds, forgings, castings, machined components and structural parts.

Need the right inspection method?

Share the material, component, suspected discontinuity and project requirements. VeriTech will help scope an appropriate examination.
