Visual inspection throughout fabrication
VT is more than a final look at a completed weld. Applied at the right stages, it can verify joint preparation and fit-up before welding, monitor workmanship during production and evaluate the finished weld.
Typical VT scope
A scope may cover material and joint preparation, alignment and fit-up, in-process surveillance, weld profile, dimensions, visible surface conditions, repairs and final examination.
Simple method, controlled conditions
Reliable VT depends on suitable access, lighting, surface condition, viewing angle, measuring tools and clearly defined acceptance criteria. These fundamentals turn observation into defensible inspection evidence.
Combining VT with other NDE methods
Visual examination is often the first method applied. Findings and project requirements may lead to MT or PT for surface examination, or UT for suitable internal examination.
